Aboriginal Artwork for the Department of Transport

Sonnex completed the manufacture and installation of Aboriginal regional signs at various locations within South Australia for the Department of Transport.

Once the order was received and drawings were verified, our programmer sent the job to our laser cutting machine for a precise finish. Our experienced welders then manufactured the posts to secure the large sheets as individual stand-alone frames. Our in-house paint shop then provided the desired colour and our team travelled to the location required.

The Arabana sign proved the most challenging task due to the extremely remote location, taking the Sonnex truck and various machinery to complete the job. The transportable accommodation and 50-degree conditions provided some good stories to tell when they returned.

The signs feature images that represent the unique aspects of each culture.

ARABANA SIGNAGE: The Arabana people are associated with the far north of South Australia and are the Traditional Owners of the Lake Eyre Region (Kati-Thanda).

NGARKAT SIGNAGE: The Ngarkat tribe lived in the Mallee scrub belt east of Murray River.

NGADJURI SIGNAGE: The Ngadjuri people are a group of Indigenous Australians whose traditional lands lie in the mid north of South Australia with a territory extending from Gawler in the south to Orroroo in the north.

NUKUNI SIGNAGE: Nukunu are a sovereign tribe of Indigenous Australians who inhabit the coastal region of South Australia around the Spencer Gulf.
